World War II has desroyed a lot of churches in the Ruhr Area. In October 1949 an emergency chuch, created by Otto Bartning, was revealed and handed over to the commune. The church was built with funds donated by Evangelic parish from Chicago. Today, it serves as a venue for events and celebrations. It was women searching through the rubble of a Germany devastated after the Second World War, who were the driving force behind that emergency church, which has been erected with bricks of the destroyed community hall. The inscriptions tell about. Pastor Werner Sonnenberg and presbytery together with artist GIGO PROPAGANDA have launched a project to support and enhance the church's visibility. In the case that this church will be declared to be UNESCO World Heritage in a few years, this artwork will have to give way.
