Description

Historic mural on the bunker in Düsseldorf-Rath (Münsterstraße 500).

The mural was originally completed on September 1, 1987, by the Wandmalgruppe Düsseldorf (a group formed that same year by the artist Klaus Klinger and the association Farbfieber e.V.) and was restored in 2014

The monumental image depicts a mother and child fleeing in panic from a bombing alert. The painting is based on a world-famous photograph by war photographer Robert Capa, who captured the moment in Barcelona in January 1939 — during the Spanish Civil War — when the German Condor Legion was bombing the city from the air.

This anti-war mural makes a powerful statement against the horrors of war directly on the façade of a former air-raid shelter. Today, both the bunker and the mural are officially listed as protected heritage sites.

Visible best from platform of S-Bahn station.

In 2013 I started with a new hobby. In the beginning it was difficult to get reliable information how to find streetart in public space. In 2016, I had the idea of sharing my information with other street art enthusiasts and started my blog “Streetartwalks”. When I found out about this new street art community at the beginning of 2018, I was immediately on board.
