Proces of Immigration

NEDERLANDS - Dit kunstwerk werd gemaakt door Tamara Djurovic, ook wel bekend als HYURO. Ze werd geboren in Argentinië en woonde in Spanje. Voor dit project werd HYURO gevraagd iets te maken over de Spaanse immigratie in Vilvoorde. Eén op de drie inwoners van Vilvoorde is van Spaanse afkomst. Opmerkelijk is dat ze bijna allemaal uit hetzelfde dorp komen, uit Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, een plaats in de provincie Cordoba in Andalusië. In het eerste decennium van de twintigste eeuw was het mijngebied van Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo één van de belangrijkste industriële centra van Andalusië. Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo was dus vooral een stad van de arbeidersklasse, waar de leefomstandigheden, zoals in veel andere arbeiderssteden, niet al te goed waren. Als je in Vilvoorde rondloopt, is de Spaanse aanwezigheid merkbaar. Je hoort voortdurend Spaanse gesprekken op straat. De muurschildering stelt het immigratieproces voor, het deken verwijst naar de cultuur, de gewoontes die we in ons dragen. HYURO overleed in november 2020.

ENGLISH - This work of art was made by Tamara Djurovic, also known as HYURO. Born in Argentina, she lived in Spain. For this project HYURO was asked to make something about the Spanish immigration in Vilvoorde. One in three inhabitants of Vilvoorde is of Spanish descent. Noteworthy is that almost all of them come from the same village, from Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, a place in the province of Córdoba in Andalusia. In the first decade of the twentieth century, the mining area of Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo was one of the most important industrial centers of Andalusia. Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo was therefore primarily a working class city, where the living conditions, as in many other worker cities, were not too good. When you walk around Vilvoorde, the Spanish presence is noticeable. You constantly hear Spanish conversations on the street. The image represents the immigration process, the blanket refers to the culture, the customs that we carry within us. HYURO died in November 2020.
