Rotterdam Art Ride

Rotterdam Art Ride is an art project initiated by Marjon van der Linde and foundation Mesh, completed in June of 2018. It consists of murals by local and international artists on the 18 pillars supporting the overground metro viaduct between the stations of Maashaven and Rijnhaven (and a bit beyond).

The goal of the project is to make visual art accessible to a wide audience and to inspire residents on a daily basis. The project focusses on making the neighbourhood more lively for it’s inhabitants and offer a new icon to the city of Rotterdam.

Part of the project is an art educational program in which local children are guided by established artists in designing one of the pillars. In total 4 of the 18 pillars are made available to four groups of kids from age 8 – 18. The program provides a platform for development and presentation for inhabitants, creating a deeper connection to the personal surroundings. The art educational program is organised in collaboration with NIFFO Gallery, Mart Bechtold and Hans Citroen with OBS Nelson Mandela. These four Pillars can be found behind the Rijnhaven metro station.

The project was intended to last for a period of 5 years. When locals realized in 2023 that the artworks were due to be painted over, they sprung into action. After the municipality announced the removal of the art, they successfully started a petition to protect the Rotterdam Art Ride from being painted over.

The route can easily be reached by public transport, just take the metro to Maashaven station. It's just a short walk under the viaduct back towards Rijnhaven station. If you're still hungry for more art after walking the ROAR, there is plenty of streetart to be found in the area. Some great murals are there as a result of the POW!WOW! festival choosing the neighborhood as their base for several years.
