Mapping Courage

Done in 2008 - this mural honors W.E.B. Du Bois and Engine #11. Du Bois was a Harvard graduate who was a civilian rights activist and author. In this piece, it shows his work with Philadelphia's 7th Ward where he surveyed blacks living in the area in 1899, a census at the time. The location of this one is where one of the original 22 fire companies wereestablished in 1871 - and #11 became the African American firehouse in 1952.
