Quello che rimane dopo una mareggiata

Biagio Conte guarda lontano, se seguiamo il suo sguardo, è rivolto verso Montepellegrino che è per eccellenza, per noi palermitani, il Monte Sacro, quello che ospita il santuario di Santa Rosalia. Fratel Biagio era un pellegrino, è un pellegrino, ma tornando a Palermo aveva capito che la strada che doveva percorrere era molto più breve, era quella per arrivare al prossimo, al quale ha dedicato tutta la sua vita. Qui dove ho dipinto il muro all'inizio della sua missione Biagio ha eretto una croce, perché ha visto che questo luogo aveva bisogno di cura. Mi chiedo quanto è effettivamente cambiato questo luogo da 30 anni a questa parte, da quando è stata eretta quella croce? Quanto le amministrazioni hanno curato questo luogo? Noi siamo ancora qui, oggi, insieme a Biagio Conte in questo pellegrinaggio a puntare l'attenzione su questo luogo e continuiamo a dire che questo quartiere ha bisogno della cura di tuttiǝ ma se questa non arriva innanzitutto da chi ha il dovere di riservargliela vorrà dire che rimarrà un'azione vana. Questa non è soltanto un'opera di commemorazione, è anche una denuncia: nel dipingere fratel Biagio, come faceva lui con i suoi digiuni, vogliamo denunciare il fatto che questo luogo ha bisogno delle nostre attenzioni. È un atto politico e spirituale che rivendica la bellezza e la cura per un luogo e principalmente per le persone che vi abitano. Noi insieme a Biagio vogliamo stare con chi non è visto, chi è escluso, emarginato.

"What remains after a storm"

Biagio Conte looks into the distance, if we follow his gaze, he is turned towards Montepellegrino which, for us Palermitans, is the Monte Sacro par excellence, the one that houses the sanctuary of Santa Rosalia. Brother Biagio was a pilgrim, he is a pilgrim, but returning to Palermo he understood that the road he had to take was much shorter, it was the one to get to the next, to whom he dedicated his whole life. Here, where I painted the wall at the beginning of his mission, Biagio erected a cross because he saw that this place needed attention. I wonder how much this place has actually changed in the 30 years since that cross was erected? How much have the administrations taken care of this place? We are still here today, together with Biagio Conte on this pilgrimage to focus attention on this place and we continue to say that this neighborhood needs everyone's care, but if this doesn't come first of all from those who have the duty to reserve it, it will mean which will remain a vain action. This is not only a work of commemoration, it is also a denunciation: in painting Brother Biagio, as he did with his fasts, we want to denounce the fact that this place needs our attention. It is a political and spiritual act that claims beauty and care for a place and mainly for the people who live there. Together with Biagio, we want to be with those who are not seen, those who are excluded, marginalized.
