The Crystal Ship 2026 markeert de 10e verjaardag van het befaamde openbare kunstfestival van Oostende, dit jaar samengesteld door Matthias Schoenaerts, die werkt onder zijn artiestennaam Zenith. Voor deze jubileumeditie brengt Schoenaerts meer dan twintig nationale en internationale kunstenaars samen uit de graffiti-, street art- en hedendaagse schilderkunst – de drie disciplines die zijn eigen artistieke visie vormgeven. Van 30 maart tot en met 11 april 2026 transformeren deze kunstenaars Oostende tot een tijdelijk open atelier, waar ze nieuwe muurschilderingen creëren in de hele stad, terwijl inwoners en bezoekers het proces van dichtbij kunnen volgen.

Ter ere van het 10-jarig jubileum van The Crystal Ship presenteert DOES een levendige, abstracte compositie die het thema van het festival weerspiegelt: blijf kijken. Zijn muurschildering nodigt de kijker uit om te vertragen, te observeren en nieuwe vormen te ontdekken binnen de gelaagde structuren. Nieuwsgierigheid speelt een centrale rol in DOES' werk, en dit kunstwerk is daarop geen uitzondering. Het werk moedigt de blik aan om te dwalen, waardoor elke voorbijganger zijn eigen betekenis kan vinden – soms zelfs onverwachte figuren of vormen onthullend die verborgen liggen in de abstractie.

DOES' stijl bevindt zich op het snijvlak van graffiti, straatkunst en hedendaagse schilderkunst. Zijn graffiti-achtergrond brengt energie en spontaniteit, terwijl zijn schilderkunstige aanpak structuur, balans en verfijning toevoegt. Deze muurschildering belichaamt die dualiteit: dynamisch maar gecontroleerd, intuïtief maar zorgvuldig gecomponeerd. Werken in de openbare ruimte voegt een extra dimensie toe. De straat wordt een open atelier waar bewoners en bezoekers het proces zien ontvouwen. Kleine interacties – een gesprek, de interpretatie van een kind, een buurman die koffie aanbiedt – geven subtiel vorm aan de sfeer rondom het werk en versterken DOES' geloof in verbinding door middel van kunst.

Ondanks de uitdagingen van het weer en de strakke deadlines, omarmt DOES de onvoorspelbaarheid van het schilderen in de buitenlucht. Voor hem is wrijving een onderdeel van het vak en het stuwt het werk vaak in onverwachte richtingen. Het resultaat is een muurschildering die beweging en positiviteit uitstraalt, bedoeld om de stad op te fleuren en de verbeelding van mensen van alle leeftijden te prikkelen.

Zoals met alle straatkunst is het kunstwerk tijdelijk. De seizoenen, het zonlicht en de stad zelf zullen het uiteindelijk veranderen. DOES accepteert deze vergankelijkheid als onderdeel van de cultuur – een herinnering dat muurschilderingen leven, veranderen en soms verdwijnen. Wat blijft is de impact: een explosie van kleur, een moment van verbondenheid en een bijdrage aan het evoluerende landschap van stedelijke kunst in Oostende.

The Crystal Ship 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Ostend’s renowned public art festival, curated this year by Matthias Schoenaerts, working under his artist name Zenith. For this milestone edition, Schoenaerts brings together more than twenty national and international artists from graffiti, street art and contemporary painting — the three disciplines that shape his own artistic vision. From 30 March to 11 April 2026, these artists will transform Ostend into a temporary open studio, creating new murals across the city while residents and visitors witness the process up close.

For the 10th anniversary of The Crystal Ship, DOES brings a vibrant, abstract composition that reflects the festival’s theme: keep looking. His mural invites viewers to slow down, observe, and discover new shapes within the layered forms. Curiosity plays a central role in DOES’s practice, and this piece is no exception. The work encourages the eye to wander, allowing each passer‑by to find their own meaning — sometimes even revealing unexpected figures or forms hidden within the abstraction.

DOES’s style sits at the intersection of graffiti, street art, and contemporary painting. His graffiti roots bring energy and spontaneity, while his painterly approach adds structure, balance, and refinement. This mural embodies that duality: dynamic yet controlled, intuitive yet carefully composed. Working in public space adds another dimension. The street becomes an open studio where residents and visitors witness the process unfold. Small interactions — a conversation, a child’s interpretation, a neighbor offering coffee — subtly shape the atmosphere around the work and reinforce DOES’s belief in connection through art.

Despite the challenges of weather and deadlines, DOES embraces the unpredictability of painting outdoors. For him, friction is part of the craft, and it often pushes the work in unexpected directions. As with all street art, the piece is temporary. Seasons, sunlight, and the city itself will eventually transform it. DOES accepts this ephemerality as part of the culture — a reminder that murals live, change, and sometimes disappear.
