Belgian artist Djoels was invited for the Kaminazpi Artist Residency program. This 3 week artistic residence program in Ondarroa, Bizkaia (Spanish State). The residence includes room and board in a unique coastal town in the Basque Country, tours, workshops, a gallery and studio at the artists disposal. Artists will be given two weeks to get to know the village, its people and its history and on the third week initiate a mural that has been inspired by their stay. Murals will be installed on walls 15m x 8m and artists are required to have a lift licence. Every year 2 artists will be selected to participate. This year Djoels was joined by Sabotaje El Montaje.
"During 5 days we received a tour, information, and were allowed to get to know the town. A port city surrounded by mountains. Slightly bigger than Egem, but somewhat the same mentality. Everyone knows everyone, and stories travel quickly. Everyone takes care of everyone and history lives on. ": shares Djoels
"Gabriel, my model. A retired sweet man with a look of character appealed to me most. He spent his life at sea, months away from home catching fish. I heard exciting stories, including from women and children who stayed on the mainland with fear of whether the father would get home safely. Now he makes miniature boats. A real artist!"
