Rone

<div>Rone's&nbsp; pensive&nbsp; woman was painted between lockdown in 2020. She sits on the back wall of the Kilburn Hotel in Hawthorn and is at her best with a typical wintry grey sky.<br>&nbsp;</div><div>Rone says the image staring back at us appears as though it has been sculpted from the building. This is achieved using a practice of glazing with many layers of paint and then finally a series of washes designed to build up texture.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>The final result a gaze of pensive permanence as she looks into the future. Something a little different for Rone as a lot of his work is designed with a limited lifetime. There is a hope that this mural will endure. Rich with themes we have come to adore, the study of beauty, decay and vulnerability.&nbsp;<br><br></div>

Guido van Helten

<div>The portrait of profoundly deaf contemporary dancer Ana Seymour was painted by Guido van Helten on a seven storey building at Melbourne Polytechnic in January 2017.Â&nbsp; The artist, who bases himself in Brisbane but spends much of his time travelling and painting, creates site specific murals that reflect the human stories of the area. This mural is typical of his sensitive monochromatic artwork and reflects the polytechnicâ€™s links to the deaf community via its Auslan diploma course and the presence of deafConnectED. Van Helten says that the image "is an interpretation of modern society and its influence on architecture."<br>Seymour, 32, was born profoundly deaf but has become well known in the Melbourne contemporary dance scene, appearing most recently in <em>Under My Skin</em>, a collaboration between deaf and hearing artists called The Delta Project. "Contemporary dance isn't only about the music," she says, explaining that despite being unable to hear anything she can sometimes "feel" music. "But I don't really rely on that. I rely on muscle memory and I rely on other bodies in the studio. I tune into their rhythms, I tune into my own rhythm."&nbsp;</div>

<div>Stormie Mills is based in Perth but frequently visits Melbourne (and international locations) His poignant characters are always painted in black and white, although here the astronaut has touches of ochre highlighting his features. As Stormie says, Black is for dirt, White is the removal of dirt, Grey is for the city and Silver is for dreams.</div>

<div>@luckylucks painted three huge white rabbits on a wall of the carpark in Artists Lane. They are a wonderful mix of colours and seemingly collaged elements. The ears of the rabbit on the right were painted over the windows of the room behind. When these photographs were taken, withing days of the paintings being completed, the users of the room had removed sections of the ears to allow light to enter. It just goes to prove that you have to be quick with the camera!</div>

<div>Japanese artist Senekt lived in Melbourne for an extended period and left behind several pieces including this one on a factory wall in Abbotsford. You will also find several examples of shutter art in this area.&nbsp;</div>

Mayonnaise

<div>Heavily tagged. Internationally renowned artist Rone started leaving his mark on Melbourne’s streets and laneways in 2004. He is known for his haunting images of women’s faces - his female muse is strong and yet fragile. Rone’s mastery of tone is visible in this golden collaboration with fellow artist and calligrapher Mayonnaize in Brunswick.</div><div><br><br></div>

Presidents Park Under Pass

Like this mural painted in Melbourne in Feb 2023, the forms fold and twist, they turn and overlap, and they’re created using iridescent colours that add even greater beauty to their sense of 3D space. <div>Anagard is an Indonesian stencil artist who visited Melbourne in late 2016. These two figures were stenciled onto opposing sides of the same corner. They are a whimsical addition to the Brunswick streetscape, although they mask a comment by the artist about consumerism. You will find them on the corner of Henry and Albert Streets.</div>

Reka One

<div>This pair of enormous murals were painted on the Facade of Melbourne Polytechnic in early 2017 by Reka One, as part of the 'Paint the Polytechnic' Project. The artist began his street art career in Melbourne and returns every now and then from his new home in Europe to add to the city's streets. Here he has painted a kookaburra in a gum tree (reminding locals of the well-known song "Kookaburra sits in the Old Gum Tree") and a Rosella amid gum flowers. Herakut

<div>"So she dreamt of running away with the monkeys. The most curious just tended to be the most courageous". This wall by Hera and Akut (Herakut) was painted on a two-story building on a sharp corner opposite the bowls club. It is a page of The Giant Storybook Project that the artists have been working on as they travel the world. The same characters can be seen in cities as far flung as Miami, Mannheim and Lexington.<br>This wall is fading but can still be enjoyed</div>

<div>This massive wall from Brisbane born graffiti artist Sofles features a beautiful portrait of the artists own daughter, Harlow.<br>It is part of a long wall painted with portraits by many of Melbourne's best-loved artists.</div>

Cobre

<div>Argentinian artist Andres Petroselli, aka Cobre (@cobreart), visited Melbourne briefly in March 2020 and left two beautiful walls. Unfortunately he arrived early in the early days of the corona virus and had to leave as soon as he could get a flight out about the time of lockdown. He painted this wall in Collingwood. The other one was in a high turnover space in Hosier Lane. I've attached a photograph of it here for reference. It was already damaged prior to lockdown. The painted skin is extraordinary.</div>

<div>Dvate's Playtypus swims in a stream littered with rubbish. The Yarra Ranges Council funded the wall to encourage storm water drain awareness in an area where the playtpus still lives but is vulnerable to the effects of pollution.<br><br>The mural can be seen as you get off the train from the city to Belgrave (on the Belgrave line)&nbsp;</div>

<div>This wall by Matt @adnate is a portrait of Dr Andrew Peters, a lecturer in Indigenous Studies at Swinburne University. Behind him are symbols of the culture that is so important to our First Nations. Dr Peters has been closely involved in the university’s Reconciliation Action Plan and this tribute portrait was painted on a wall of a building on the university’s Hawthorn campus.<br>The details of the portrait reflect the artist's consummate skill with aerosol<br><br></div>

<div>This series of walls was painted by jimmy dvate beside a green pathway leading to Melbourne’s Merri Creek. It focuses on threatened species in the area - the Sacred Kingfisher, Growling Grass Frog (Southern Bell Frog), Platypus, Grassland Copper Butterfly and Golden Sun Moth. Jason Parker

<div>Jason Parker painted this portrait of his artist friend VEINS (IG @soleveins). In a nice twist he asked his friend to paint the motif on his own top. it is easily recognised as typical of his own work. These two artist have collaborated on a number of walls in Melbourne. While their styles are very different, they complement each other perfectly.</div>

Baby Guerrilla

<div>This six-storey high pasteup was created by local artist Baby Guerrilla on a wall at Victoria University's Footscray campus, at the cnr of Ballarat Rd and Tiernan St.&nbsp; The giant figure represents an African woman flying through the air (typical of the artist's work), carrying a briefcase and a book. Baby Guerrilla prefers to remain anonymous, in the belief that the work should speak for itself, without the mediation of a frame, a gallery or the identity of the artist.</div>

There's often a glint of mischief in the eyes of his models - this always helps to engage the viewer. the quality of his walls doesn't need to even be explained - they speak for themselves. This wall contains a self-portrait. Check out the 'marble' he is flicking towards the pirate cat. Are you sure it's a marble?&nbsp;</div>

<div>LucyLucy is a French artist who now calls Melbourne home. Her female characters, like these two, are always beautiful and elegant. She creates vibrant walls, with her wonderful palette and a dazzling array of patterns.<br>Look across the road to the Hello House. The word has been made by displacing bricks to create the letters.</div>

My Dog Sighs

<div>My Dog Sighs painted this signature wall during a visit to Melbourne in May 2019. The detail of the pupil of the eye references the silhouette of Luna Park, the local fun park, with its attendant palm trees.</div>

<div>You'll find this life-size stencil on a door down a laneway. It's so life-like that it makes me do a double-take when I see it. Keep walking down this laneway - there's more work by a range of artists in a short cul-de-sac a little further on.</div>

<div>ELLE is an artist based in new York. She has visited Melbourne a number of times, often painting with her friend Vexta.</div>

<div>Julian (aka Pachi) explains that this joyful mural is the manifestation of the freedom of happiness and how we (humans) are born naturally with it. Swallows are an ancient symbol of hope, prosperity, fortune and luck as well as loyalty and love.<br>You'll find it down the lane beside Alexander the Great restaurant, on the way to a carpark&nbsp;</div>

<div>This clever appropriation of Michelangelo's 'Creation of Adam' from the Sistine Ceiling can be found on the wall of Coles supermarket in South Melbourne. It was painted by Melbourne's Murals in May 2020 and reflects the pandemic-induced need to physically distance. Brigitte Dawson and Melissa Turner are the team at Melbourne's Murals.</div>

Do they even need to? -<br>The nature of intelligence… what is the nature of human intelligence? -<br>The ability to fuck up, make mistakes and grow from them. -<br>The ability to discern right from wrong - better from worse, aesthetically, morally, spiritually. -<br>The balance between chaos and order. -&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>This mural tries to look for the answer.&nbsp;</div>

<div>This wall is the result of a collaboration between Adnate, Slicer and Itch of the AWOL crew. It has recently been freshened up but the figure of the Aboriginal boy by Adnate remains central. The harmonious colours help to blend the very different techniques and styles of the artists.<br>* in early 2018 Adnate refreshed the portrait of the Aboriginal boy - it's beautifully fresh. But it has already been badly tagged by fire extinguisher</div>
