Bleichenvogel

A large bird sits on a graphic black line, surrounded by a swarm of leaves and floral forms. Turquoise, pink, violet and yellow dominate the approximately 15-metre-high mural. The composition responds closely to the architecture, incorporating the windows into the design and extending across two sides of the building.

Titled “Bleichenvogel”, the mural was created in 2021 by the Mainz-based Studio Lacks. The client was BEWEMA Immobilien GmbH, which renovated the building in the Bleichenviertel district and converted it into student housing. The commission followed a public design tender. Studio Lacks describes the work as a bird surrounded by an illustrative swarm of leaves. Repeated graphic lines provide a deliberate contrast to the detailed treatment of the leaves and bird.

The photograph particularly shows how the natural motif interacts with the architecture: parts of the bird overlap the windows, while the leaves follow the irregular shape of the building. No further symbolic meaning of the bird is documented in the available sources.

Studio Lacks describes the work as currently the largest mural in Mainz.
