Mpozi

"Mpozi Mshale Tolbert was an award-winning Photographer, DJ, and Humanitarian. He moved from Philadelphia, PA to Indianapolis, IN in 1998, where he lived until his unfortunate passing in July of 2006 at the age of 34.

Mpozi's dedication to his craft, his family and his friends was only a small part of what made him special. His altruistic nature and infectious laugh were always intact, whether he was helping those experiencing homelessness or comforting someone while on-site as a photographer at a solemn crime scene. his positivity and generous nature should be celebrated. Through this piece of art, we want to remember and instill the spirit of those values in our community.

Depicted in the mural are the seven symbols of African Humanism, a world view that promotes interconnectedness and coexistence of all humankind. Mpozi was raised to reflect these values in his daily work and life. We feel that all people can benefit from mindfulness and practice of these principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

This mural was created by local arts organization BRIDGE Collective. Working together since 2002, we are a dynamic cooperative dedicated to sharing knowledge and creating an understanding for the enrichment of life through cultural and artistic diversity. Our mission is to create an environment where the arts flourish."
