<div>Cork County Council:<br>Work has been completed on a transformative mural at the ‘Cut-and-Cover’ Tunnel in Monkstown, with the iconic tunnel upgraded with colour and imagery, in an homage to the towns rail, industrial and maritime heritage.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;The mural includes a train exiting the tunnel which echoes the era when trains came through Monkstown. There is a portrait of the legendary local man Captain Richard Roberts. Under his command the Sirius became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to North America under continual steam power. The mural also depicts the well-known local fable about a dog rescuing a boy from the water which dates back to 1800. Artists Gareth Joyce, Shane O’Driscoll and Deirdre Breen worked on the piece, while providing mentoring and experience for local artists Jamie Howard and Mark Quirke.</div>

<div>Independent.ie, David Looby:&nbsp;</div><div>Joyce said he researched the history of the walling of New Ross, having been sent a brief of what the council wanted as the theme of the murals.&nbsp;</div><div>"The route I went is quite literal. I felt like it needed to be quite literal. During my research I noted that there was a rota for building the wall. It was on Sundays that the women took over. I thought that was an interesting stance.”<br>He also like the story of the Maiden Gate where any man who committed any crime against a local woman was jailed in the ‘women’s jail’ and the strong women who featured in his murals reflect the New Ross women of that era.&nbsp;</div>
