Maastricht-based artist Dave de Leeuw is a versatile visual artist. He studied at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and creates, amongst other things, paintings, drawings, sculptures and murals.

In 2023, he created the mural Stray Memories for the Gruuts neighbourhood project in Mariaberg. This project aims to bring the stories, memories and experiences of local residents to life in public spaces.

The mural was inspired by the experiences of a local resident, who shared two special memories. A rabbit lived in her garden; it would regularly escape but always returned – until the day the houses around her were demolished. When the rabbit escaped again, it could no longer find its way back. This symbolises the feeling many residents experience when their familiar neighbourhood changes as a result of redevelopment.

The mural also depicts the local resident’s daughter, cycling with a plate of food for an elderly lady in the neighbourhood. This image reflects the power of looking after one another – a value deeply rooted in Mariaberg.
