Op de hoek van een anonieme straat in Berchem duikt Smok’s panda op alsof hij net door de gevel is gebroken. Een wit gebouw, zwarte ramen, een paar verse bamboestengels die bij het eerste bezoek nog in de grond gingen, het soort toevallige setting waar een artiest met gevoel voor timing alleen maar mee kan lachen. Zoals Smok zelf zei: “Tja, ze vroegen een dier dat positieve energie uitstraalt, een aaibaarheidsfactor heeft… witte muur, zwarte ramen en ze waren bij het eerste bezoek bamboe aan het planten… 1+1=panda.” En eerlijk: je voelt die logica meteen.

De panda kijkt tussen frisgroene bamboe naar buiten, met een blik die tegelijk zacht en streetwise is. Geen overacting, geen gimmicks, gewoon een dier dat precies genoeg attitude heeft om in Berchem te passen. De strakke witte muur maakt het zwart‑wit van de panda nog intenser, alsof hij niet geschilderd is maar uit de gevel komt kruipen. Smok’s versie voelt als de urban opvolger: minder braaf, minder geënsceneerd, meer straat. Een panda die niet in een kooi zit, maar gewoon zijn plek opeist tussen beton, baksteen en bamboe.

Het resultaat is een mural die de buurt niet alleen opfleurt, maar ook een glimlach losmaakt. Een panda die positieve energie uitstraalt, ja, maar dan wel met een Antwerpse knipoog en een Berchemse backbone.

The panda looks out from between fresh green bamboo, with a gaze that is both soft and streetwise. No overacting, no gimmicks, just an animal with exactly enough attitude to fit in Berchem. The sleek white wall makes the black and white of the panda even more intense, as if it wasn't painted but is crawling out of the facade. The bamboo is sharp and graphic, a typical Smok touch that keeps the whole thing fresh without making it too sterile.

And somewhere, there is a touch of nostalgia surrounding the work. Antwerp has had a panda phase before; in the 80s, half of Flanders was clamoring at the Zoo to see that iconic panda couple. Smok’s version feels like the urban successor: less tame, less staged, more street. A panda that isn't in a cage, but simply claims its place amidst concrete, brick, and bamboo.

The result is a mural that not only brightens up the neighborhood but also brings a smile to people's faces. A panda that radiates positive energy, yes, but with an Antwerp wink and a Berchem backbone.
