The Sutton Heritage Mosaic is a monumental public art installation located on a prominent exterior wall in Trinity Square, just off Sutton High Street, commemorating centuries of regional history.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

The mosaic was designed and created by British artists Rob Turner and Gary Drostle. Gary Drostle is a prominent UK public artist and mosaicist with decades of experience creating large-scale architectural and community mosaic murals across the UK, North America, and Europe. His collaborative projects with Rob Turner frequently focus on capturing civic identity, archival heritage, and local biodiversity through traditional mosaic craftsmanship.

ABOUT THE PIECE:

Scale & Materials: Measuring approximately nine meters high and five meters wide, it comprises around 100,000 individually placed vitreous glass and ceramic tesserae, making it one of the largest vertical mosaics in the London area.
Historical Vignettes: The composition organizes roughly 19 distinct scenes and figures from the borough’s past into an interconnected vertical tapestry.
Key Subjects Represented:
- Architecture & Landmarks: Historic sites including Nonsuch Palace (built by Henry VIII), Carew Manor, and the medieval Whitehall building in Cheam.
- Notable Figures: Historical personalities associated with the area, such as Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh, and river conservationist/poet John Donne.
- Transport & Industry: Visual depictions of early coaching routes on the Brighton road, the development of regional coaching inns (such as the Cock Hotel), and the arrival of the railway line that transformed Sutton from a rural village into an urban center.

DOCUMENTATION NOTE:

Commissioned by the London Borough of Sutton and completed in 1994, the mural remains in prime condition in Trinity Square. It is widely recognized as a landmark example of 1990s municipal public mosaic art in Greater London.
