“Moederheil was the largest halfway house in the Netherlands until the late 1960s. Halfway houses were maternity hospitals for unmarried mothers, women and girls who were considered unable to care for their children or for whom the shame of having a child was too great. After giving birth, they immediately had to give up their child for adoption, often without any further contact. Not the biological bond with the mother, but the bond to be built with the adoptive family was considered essential for the child.

In the 20th century, between 15,000 and 25,000 children were given up for adoption in the Netherlands.

Nils has had many conversations with the group involved supported the arrival of this Blind Wall. Those conversations inspired him to create a work of art that reflects this painful past. The common denominator in the personal stories was the moment of separation between mother and child. This is symbolized in the mural by a broken golden cord and two hands: one of the mother and one of the child, both with a cord around their wrist that breaks at the corner of the facade. By placing the hands separately on different sides of the wall, the stories can also be viewed separately, as all stories of those involved are unique.

This mural was created through close collaboration between the Moederheil working group, Blind Walls Gallery and Breda City Archives, with the cooperation of the Municipality of Breda.

As a teenager in the suburbs of Washington DC, Nils Westergard began making stencils and graffiti and developed a unique style that can now be seen on walls across the US, Europe and Australia. Muurschildering voor Blind Walls Gallery in 2024

“Deze schildering focust zich op de pijnlijke adoptiegeschiedenis van Moederheil, dat tot eind jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw het grootste doorgangshuis in Nederland was. Doorgangshuizen waren kraamklinieken voor ongehuwde moeders, vrouwen en meisjes die niet in staat werden geacht voor hun kind te kunnen zorgen. Of voor wie de schande van een kind te groot was. Na hun bevalling moesten ze onmiddellijk hun kind afstaan, voor adoptie, vaak zonder enig verder contact. Niet de biologische band met de moeder maar de op te bouwen band met het adoptiegezin werd van essentieel belang geacht voor het kind. In de 20ste eeuw zijn in Nederland tussen de 15.000 en 25.000 kinderen afgestaan voor adoptie.

Naast een doorgangshuis diende Moederheil ook als een reguliere kraamkliniek.

Nils heeft veel gesprekken gevoerd met de groep betrokkenen die zich ingezet hebben voor de komst van deze Blind Wall. Die gesprekken inspireerde hem om een kunstwerk te creëren dat dit pijnlijke verleden weerspiegelt. De gemene deler in de persoonlijke verhalen, was het moment van scheiding tussen moeder en kind. Dat wordt in de muurschildering gesymboliseerd door een gebroken gouden koord en twee handen: een van de moeder en een van het kind, beiden met koord om hun pols dat breekt op de hoek van de gevel. Door de handen apart op verschillende zijden van de muur te plaatsen, kunnen de verhalen ook los van elkaar worden bekeken, zoals alle verhalen van de betrokkenen uniek zijn.

Deze muurschildering is tot stand gekomen door een nauwe samenwerking tussen de werkgroep muurschildering Moederheil, Blind Walls Gallery en Stadsarchief Breda, met medewerking van Gemeente Breda.

Als tiener in de buitenwijken van Washington DC begon hij met het maken van stencils en graffiti en ontwikkelde hij een unieke stijl die inmiddels te zien is op muren in de VS, Europa en Australië. Zijn complex uitgesneden stencils, hiphop-muziekvideo’s en grote murals onderzoeken onderwerpen als intimiteit, ego, macht en kwetsbaarheid”. - Blind Walls Gallery
