The Crystal Ship 2026 markeert de 10e verjaardag van het befaamde openbare kunstfestival van Oostende, dit jaar samengesteld door Matthias Schoenaerts, die werkt onder zijn artiestennaam Zenith. Voor deze jubileumeditie brengt Schoenaerts meer dan twintig nationale en internationale kunstenaars samen uit de graffiti, street art en hedendaagse schilderkunst – de drie disciplines die zijn eigen artistieke visie vormgeven. Van 30 maart tot en met 11 april 2026 transformeren deze kunstenaars Oostende tot een tijdelijk open atelier, waar ze nieuwe muurschilderingen creëren in de hele stad, terwijl inwoners en bezoekers het proces van dichtbij kunnen volgen.

De muurschildering is een weerspiegeling van de huidige toestand van de wereld, die wordt gekenmerkt door conflicten, oorlog en onnodig geweld, en nodigt uit om even stil te staan en ons af te vragen welke rol wij individueel en collectief spelen bij het vormgeven van een andere toekomst.

In deze context straalt het werk ook hoop uit, gesymboliseerd door de klaproos, een bloem die na de Eerste Wereldoorlog op de verwoeste velden van Vlaanderen opbloeide. Hier staat zij symbool voor veerkracht, herinnering en vernieuwing.

Ruído is het creatief project van de Portugese artiesten Draw (Frederico Soares Campos) en Contra (Rodrigo Guinea Gonçalves), wier achtergrond sterk is beïnvloed door graffiti en straatkunst. De aard van het werk van Ruído komt tot uiting in hun naam (Ruído betekent lawaai) en onthult de wortels en invloeden van beide kunstenaars. Ze maken een kunst die zich in lagen ontwikkelt, schijnbaar verwarrend maar diepgaand georganiseerd en symbolisch, die betrekking heeft op de stedelijke ruimte en alles wat daarbij hoort: mensen, gebouwen, beweging, tags, graffiti, posters en wanorde.

In de muurschilderingen van Ruído wordt het monochrome, figuratieve en diep menselijke universum van Draw verweven met de kleurrijke, abstracte, geometrische en textuurrijke benadering van Contra, wat leidt tot composities die een sterke impact hebben op hun ruimte en omgeving, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd veelzijdige verbindingen met de toeschouwer creëren.

The Crystal Ship 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Ostend’s renowned public art festival, curated this year by Matthias Schoenaerts, working under his artist name Zenith. For this milestone edition, Schoenaerts brings together more than twenty national and international artists from graffiti, street art and contemporary painting — the three disciplines that shape his own artistic vision. From 30 March to 11 April 2026, these artists will transform Ostend into a temporary open studio, creating new murals across the city while residents and visitors witness the process up close.

The mural reflects on the current state of the world, marked by conflict, war, and unnecessary violence, inviting a moment to pause and question our individual and collective role in shaping a different future.

Within this context, the work also carries a sense of hope, symbolised by the poppy, a flower that grew across the devastated fields of Flanders after World War I. Here, it becomes a sign of resilience, memory, and renewal.

The nature of Ruído’s work is reflected in their name (Ruído means ‘noise’) and reveals the roots and influences of both artists. They create art that unfolds in layers, seemingly chaotic yet deeply organised and symbolic, relating to urban space and everything associated with it: people, buildings, movement, tags, graffiti, posters and disorder.

In Ruído’s murals, Draw’s monochrome, figurative and deeply human universe is interwoven with Contra’s colourful, abstract, geometric and textural approach, resulting in compositions that have a powerful impact on their space and surroundings, whilst simultaneously creating multifaceted connections with the viewer.
