This piece takes inspiration from the poem “First They Came” by German pastor Martin Niemöller. Once a supporter of Hitler, Niemöller later turned against the Nazi regime after witnessing its brutality—an act that led to his imprisonment in a concentration camp.
The original poem referred to Communists, Trade Unionists, and Jewish people as targets of persecution. In this reinterpretation, those groups have been updated to reflect a contemporary context, becoming Immigrants, Trans People, and Protesters.
