Studio Giftig coquelicot comme symbole de résilience et renaissance Récompensé par le prix « Street Art Cities Best of 2024 – Choix des Experts » en 2023 suite à la fresque « Echoes of Harmony » réalisée à Eindhoven, Studio Gifitg continue dans sa démarche artistique qui place l’homme, la vie et la philosophie au cœur des réflexions que souhaitent provoquer le duo. Niels van Swaemen et Kaspar van Leek travaillent ensemble depuis 2007 et ont posé pour la première fois leurs pinceaux à Boulogne-sur-Mer. Pour réaliser un mur marquant et poétique autour de la figure d’un vieil homme qui semble captiver par des coquelicots qui flottent dans l’air.

« Ce mur montre un homme plutôt âgé, très expressif » explique le duo. « Il représente la sagesse et l’expérience que l’on acquiert peu à peu dans la vie. Autour de lui et dans sa main, des coquelicots prennent vie et pour certains sortent de son corps et grandissent. Ces fleurs sont un symbole. Elles représentent le fait que si la vie est parfois difficile, de toutes ces expériences compliquées ressort quelque chose de positif, de nouveau et de bon. C’est une métaphore du cycle de la vie. »

Le coquelicot est connu pour représenter la résilience et l’espoir. Ces fleurs peuvent apparaître sur de nouveaux terrains chaque année.

« Chaque fleur a sa propre symbolique que l’on n’associe pas forcément à l’endroit où l’on réalise la fresque » continue Studio Giftig. « Ce mur s’inscrit dans notre démarche artistique globale. Pour réaliser nos personnages, on aime s’inspirer de portraits que l’on réalise nous-même dans la rue, parfois en studio ou que l’on peut voir sur les réseaux sociaux comme facebook et Instagram ce qui est le cas pour ce vieil homme. »

Une œuvre symbolique magnifique réalisée entièrement au spray, outil de prédilection des deux néerlandais issus du monde du graffiti. Un mur qui trouve également toute sa place dans ce magnifique quartier où tant d’œuvres d’art ont vu le jour cet été grâce au talent d’artistes venus du monde entier.

« Boulogne-sur-Mer est une superbe place pour peindre avec tous ces murs magnifiques. Il y a des grands artistes qui sont venus ici avant nous » continuent les deux artistes. « C’est super de travailler ici et de créer un mur au milieu de toutes ces créations. Ce quartier est vraiment devenu un musée à ciel ouvert qui apporte la culture au plus près des habitants. On sait que tout le monde ne va pas dans les musées et cette démarche de démocratisation culturelle est vraiment importante et intéressante. On sent les habitants fiers de toutes ces fresques. Cela crée une identité autour de quelque chose d’universel qu’est le street art. Et puis cela fait découvrir différentes parties de la ville. En plus l’organisation est parfaite. Hier, nous avons rencontré Vesod, un artiste italien également présent. C’est génial de partager ces moments ensemble et d’échanger sur nos façons de créer. »

Awarded the Street Art Cities Best of 2024 – Expert Choice prize for their mural Echoes of Harmony in Eindhoven, Studio Giftig continues its artistic journey by placing humanity, life, and philosophy at the heart of the reflections their work seeks to inspire.

Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek have been working together since 2007, and this marks their first mural in Boulogne-sur-Mer. They created a striking and poetic artwork centered on an elderly man who appears mesmerized by poppies drifting through the air.

"This mural portrays an older man with a very expressive face," the duo explains. "He represents the wisdom and experience that we gradually gain throughout life. Around him and in his hand, poppies come to life, with some emerging from his body and continuing to grow. These flowers are symbolic. They represent the idea that even when life is difficult, something positive, new, and meaningful can emerge from those challenging experiences. It's a metaphor for the cycle of life."

The poppy is widely recognized as a symbol of resilience and hope. These flowers have the remarkable ability to bloom on newly disturbed ground year after year.

"Every flower has its own symbolism, which isn't necessarily connected to the place where we paint the mural," Studio Giftig continues. "This artwork fits within our broader artistic vision. For our characters, we like to draw inspiration from portraits we photograph ourselves in the street, sometimes in the studio, or from images we come across on social media such as Facebook and Instagram—which is the case for this elderly man."

This beautiful and deeply symbolic mural was created entirely with spray paint, the preferred medium of the two Dutch artists, whose roots lie in graffiti. It has found its place in a remarkable neighborhood where numerous artworks have appeared this summer thanks to artists from around the world.

"Boulogne-sur-Mer is an incredible place to paint, with so many amazing walls," the artists say. "Great artists have painted here before us. It's fantastic to create a mural surrounded by all these works. This neighborhood has truly become an open-air museum that brings culture directly to the people. We know that not everyone visits museums, so making art accessible in public space is incredibly important. You can feel how proud the local residents are of these murals. They create a shared identity around something universal: street art. They also encourage people to discover different parts of the city. On top of that, the organization has been perfect. Yesterday we met the Italian artist Vesod, who is also painting here. It's wonderful to share these moments together and exchange ideas about our creative processes."
