Since 1964 Vaz Gomes has been representing and commercialising, as wholesalers and retailers, raw materials for the mechanical construction, shipbuilding, turning and metalworking industries. The Company was set up on 14 October 1964 with a share capital of 100 escudos by partners Pedro Vaz Gomes, António Marques dos Reis and Aníbal Pires Antunes.
It was founded in Rua de Cascais, where Soc. Comercial Monteiro Gomes, a large commercial company that dominated the machinery, tools and industrial products market in Lisbon until the 1960s, had its headquarters.
After the disappearance of Monteiro Gomes, Vaz Gomes moved into the warehouses of the old oil department of the ‘mother company’, in Rua Maria Pia, where it transferred its head office. Alcântara was then one of the oldest and most flourishing areas of Lisbon, due to the development of countless companies that, since the industrial advent of the 18th and 19th centuries, had opted for location, access and available labour as conditions for setting up.
Manuel Rosa has been part of the management team of Vaz Gomes since 1967. He had gradually joined the company and had also brought his wife Maria de Lourdes Rosa. After 1981 they took over the entire capital and management of Vaz Gomes until his death in 2003.
The company's family tradition continues, with the children and grandchildren holding the entire capital, which has been held by the family for over 40 years, and since 2017 the company's management has been entrusted to a family member.
