Since April 2012, the memorial at the former Düsseldorf-Derendorf freight depot (at the corner of Marc-Chagall-Straße and Toulouser Allee) has commemorated the more than 6,000 Jewish people from the Düsseldorf administrative district who were deported from this site to ghettos and extermination camps by the National Socialists. The memorial is designed as a deep cut into the ground of the former freight depot and symbolizes an open wound in the city's history.
Inscribed on the steel wall are the names of the places to which people were deported — among them Litzmannstadt (Łódź), Minsk, Riga, Theresienstadt, Izbica, and Auschwitz.
