This new mural by Verfdokter (Robert-Jan Brink) has a remarkable story behind it.

The Otterstraat has a long tradition of mural art. The first mural was painted in 1985 and depicted a hot-air balloon floating above the street.

In 1996, the wall received a new mural. The hot-air balloon was still present, but now appeared as a small detail in the distance, while an otter took centre stage in the foreground.

In 2013, Verfdokter created another mural, once again featuring both the otter and the hot-air balloon. This time, Utrecht's iconic Dom Tower was also given a prominent place in the composition.

Since 2025, however, most of this mural has been hidden from view by the construction of an apartment building in front of the wall (see photos).

By then, local residents had become very attached to the mural and launched a campaign under the slogan, "We want our otter back!"

Their campaign was successful. Verfdokter painted a new mural on the opposite side of the Otterstraat, near the Herenweg, once again featuring the otter, the Dom Tower and a hot-air balloon.

The mural also gives a prominent place to St. Monica's Church, which was demolished in 1977. In addition, it features a historic Utrecht tram, commemorating the tram service that once ran through this neighbourhood.

Deze nieuwe muurschildering van Verfdokter (Robert-Jan Brink) kent een bijzonder verhaal.

De Otterstraat heeft een lange geschiedenis als het gaat om muurschilderingen. De eerste schildering werd in 1985 aangebracht en toonde een luchtballon die boven de Otterstraat zweefde.

In 1996 kreeg de muur een nieuwe schildering. De luchtballon was nog altijd aanwezig, maar nu als een klein detail in de verte. Op de voorgrond stond een otter afgebeeld.

Verfdokter maakte in 2013 opnieuw een muurschildering, waarop zowel de otter als de luchtballon terugkeerden. Daarnaast kreeg ook de Domtoren een prominente plek in het ontwerp.

Sinds 2025 is deze schildering echter grotendeels aan het zicht onttrokken door de bouw van een appartementencomplex vóór de muur (zie foto's).

De bewoners waren inmiddels zeer gehecht geraakt aan de muurschildering en begonnen een actie onder de slogan: 'Wij willen onze otter terug!'

Met succes. Verfdokter maakte aan de andere zijde van de Otterstraat, bij de Herenweg, een nieuwe muurschildering waarop opnieuw de otter, de Domtoren en een luchtballon zijn te zien.

Daarnaast heeft ook de Monicakerk, die in 1977 werd gesloopt, een prominente plaats gekregen. Verder is een historische Utrechtse tram afgebeeld, als verwijzing naar de tram die vroeger door deze buurt reed.
