Description

In the narrow lanes of Laon’s historic old town, a series of large-scale murals brings together architecture, local history and traditional stories. Created by Pierre-Émilien Grenier, the paintings transform these confined passageways into an open-air historical narrative. The Ruelle des Neufliers is particularly notable, with murals covering approximately 100 metres of wall space and depicting figures and scenes from different periods in the city’s history.

Among the historical figures represented is Jean-Paul Sartre, who taught for a year at the teacher-training college in Laon during the 1930s. His portrait recalls the philosopher’s connection with the city. Other paintings commemorate notable local personalities and historical episodes, including Saint Rémi.

The murals are integrated into the existing architectural setting, interacting with the old masonry, stone details and distinctive features of the alley. Trompe-l’œil scenes create the impression of depth, while framed portraits introduce a gallery-like element. The combination of historical figures, narrative scenes and illusionistic painting blurs the boundaries between contemporary mural art and the historic surroundings. Walking through the Ruelle des Neufliers thus becomes an encounter with the many layers of Laon’s past.
