The "Lifesaver" is one of the most colorful and iconic landmarks in downtown Duisburg. It is a part of the Duisburg Fountain Mile (Brunnenmeile), a one-kilometer stretch featuring six unique, kinetic fountains designed by different artists.. It was created between 1991 and 1993 by the famous French artist Niki de Saint Phalle in collaboration with her husband, the Swiss kinetic artist Jean Tinguel
The sculpture features a massive, colorful bird-like mythical creature with a smaller female figure clinging to it — hence the name "Lifesaver." The fountain is dynamic. The heavy sculpture slowly rotates, tilts slightly back and forth, and sprays water from various nozzles.
