Deze muurschildering in Arcen vertelt niet zomaar een verhaal over natuur. Er zitten verschillende lagen in die allemaal terugvoeren naar Limburg, Venlo, Arcen én naar de mensen die zich met deze plek verbonden voelen. Een belangrijk beeld daarin is de nachtegaal.

De nachtegaal zit diep verankerd in de Limburgse cultuur. Al sinds 1909 klinkt hij in de eerste regels van het officiële Limburgse volkslied "Limburg mijn Vaderland": “Waar in ’t bronsgroen eikenhout, ’t nachtegaaltje zingt.” Daar staat de vogel symbool voor het groene Limburgse landschap en het gevoel van thuis. Maar ook dichter bij Venlo duikt diezelfde nachtegaal op. In het bekende Venlose lied As de sterre dao baove Straole zingt hij, verscholen in het groen, een liefdeslied. Het lied voert door het landschap rond Venlo en vertelt over liefde, herinnering en verbondenheid met de streek. Precies daarin ligt ook de verbinding met Arcen.

Initiatiefneemster Petra Raijer wilde met deze mural niet simpelweg een mooie muur laten maken. Vanuit haar betrokkenheid bij Het Lokaal en Arcen ontstond het idee om een kunstwerk te creëren waarin juist het verhaal van de omgeving herkenbaar zou worden. Daarom komen in het ontwerp verwijzingen naar het landschap en de natuur van Arcen samen met elementen die verder teruggrijpen op de Limburgse identiteit. De nabijgelegen Kasteeltuinen van Arcen, met hun bloemen, planten en rijke natuur, vormen daarbij een belangrijke inspiratiebron. De nachtegaal wordt zo bijna de rode draad. Een vogel die ooit symbool werd voor heel Limburg, die terugkeert in de Venlose liedcultuur en die hier opnieuw een plek krijgt, midden in Arcen.

De achtergrond van de muurschildering verwijst subtiel naar de Kasteeltuinen van Arcen. In de bloemen, natuurlijke vormen en sfeer van het beeld komt het groene en kleurrijke karakter van deze bijzondere plek terug. Zo ontstaat een verbinding tussen cultuur, natuur en identiteit: van de nachtegaal als Limburgs symbool tot aan de tuinen die zo kenmerkend zijn voor Arcen.

This mural in Arcen tells more than just a story about nature. It contains various layers, all of which tie in with Limburg, Venlo, Arcen and the people who feel a connection to this place. A key motif in the mural is the nightingale.

The nightingale is deeply rooted in Limburg culture. Ever since 1909, it has featured in the opening lines of the official Limburg anthem ‘Limburg, mijn vaderland’: ‘Where, amongst the bronze-green oak trees, the little nightingale sings.’ There, the bird symbolises the green Limburg landscape and the sense of home. But that same nightingale also makes an appearance closer to Venlo. In the well-known Venlo song ‘As de sterre dao baove Straole’, it sings a love song, hidden amongst the greenery. The song takes you through the countryside around Venlo and tells of love, memories and a sense of connection to the region. It is precisely in this that the link with Arcen lies.

With this mural Petra Raijer, the initiator of the project, did not simply want to have a pretty wall painted. Her involvement with Het Lokaal and Arcen gave rise to the idea of creating a work of art that would specifically reflect the story of the local area. That is why the design combines references to Arcen’s landscape and nature with elements that draw further back on Limburg’s identity. The nearby Arcen Castle Gardens, with their flowers, plants and rich natural environment, are a key source of inspiration in this regard.
The nightingale thus almost becomes the central theme. A bird that once became a symbol for the whole of Limburg, which reappears in Venlo’s musical culture and is given a new home here, right in the heart of Arcen.

The background of the mural subtly references the Arcen Castle Gardens. The greenery and colourful character of this special place are reflected in the flowers, natural forms and atmosphere of the artwork. This creates a connection between culture, nature and identity: from the nightingale as a symbol of Limburg to the gardens that are so characteristic of Arcen.
