Deze muurschildering van Studio Giftig op de zijgevel van de sporthal van basisschool ’t Stekske in de Lommelse parochie Kolonie, werd gerealiseerd in samenwerking met SAGA en de stad Lommel. Aan het project ging een participatietraject vooraf waarbij buurtbewoners ideeën en tekeningen konden insturen. Hun input vormde de basis voor de uiteindelijke mural. 

In de muurschildering komen glas, natuur en cultuur samen. Een vrouw verschijnt achter subtiel glas, waarin een weerspiegeling verwijst naar het Lommelse natuurgebied Sahara. Op haar vinger zit een zanglijster als symbool voor cultuur en beleving die in deze buurt een prominente plaats innemen. Kleine details zoals vlierbessen knipogen naar lokale streekproducten.

De titel 'Zelfreflectie' verwijst naar het moment waarop de wereld even stilvalt en je jezelf herkent in wat je omringt. Het is een grens die niet scheidt, maar verbindt: tussen binnen en buiten, tussen zien en begrijpen. In die stilte ontstaat helderheid en ontstaat er ruimte voor inzicht. Reflectie staat namelijk altijd in dialoog met de wereld om je heen. Op die manier wordt zien een vorm van herkenning en groei.

Studio Giftig werd begin 2007 opgericht door Kaspar van Leek en Niels van Swaemen. Het Nederlandse creatieve duo staat bekend om hun hyperrealistische muurschilderingen waarin ze urban art en fotorealisme combineren met subtiele surrealistische elementen.

This mural by Studio Giftig on the side wall of the sports hall at ’t Stekske primary school in the Kolonie parish of Lommel was created in collaboration with SAGA and the town of Lommel. The project was preceded by a participatory process during which local residents were invited to submit ideas and drawings. Their input formed the basis for the final mural.

The mural brings together glass, nature and culture. A woman appears behind a subtle glass panel, in which a reflection refers to the Sahara nature reserve in Lommel. A song thrush perches on her finger as a symbol of culture and experience, which occupy a prominent place in this neighbourhood. Small details such as elderberries nod to local produce.

The title ‘Self Reflection’ refers to that moment when the world stands still for a moment and you recognise yourself in your surroundings. It is a boundary that does not divide, but connects: between inside and outside, between seeing and understanding. In that silence, clarity emerges and space is created for insight. Reflection is, after all, always in dialogue with the world around you. In this way, seeing becomes a form of recognition and growth.

Studio Giftig was founded in early 2007 by Kaspar van Leek and Niels van Swaemen. The Dutch creative duo are known for their hyper-realistic murals, in which they combine urban art and photorealism with subtle surrealist elements.
