A gaucho is a skilled, traditionally semi-nomadic horseman and cattle herder of the South American pampas (grasslands). Beyond the fence is based on a photo I took in Salto Uruguay of former Gaucho Jose Jorge la Lindre that now is a parking attendent after many years of making a living as a farmer on the Uruguayan countryside.
After travelling Uruguay for a month in search of the Gaucho I quickly realised they were hard to find than initially expected. The world is ever changing and most of it, i like to believe, is for the better of human longevity. But our choices have consequences for traditions that might not be here in the next 50 years. Due to changes in moral perception and industrialisation some traditional ways of life are on the cusp of being lost. Traditions that have been handed down from father to son and daughter will get lost. This piece is not a political statement but merely an observation and conservation for future generations How will we look back to the times we live in a 100 years when there might not be any more meat consumption and Gauchos?
