In the underpass leading from the Bredestraathof to Bredestraat, there is a work of art by the Rotterdam-based artist and illustrator Marije Maria (@_marijemaria).
Her work is highly distinctive and recognisable: she uses stylised forms, clean divisions of space and bright colours. Female figures and nature almost always take centre stage. This is also evident in this piece, as are the themes of self-love and self-confidence. Other recurring themes in her work include women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights.
During her art studies in 2017, Marije Maria spent an academic year in Barcelona. It was there that she created her first mural and discovered her passion. Since then, she has been creating large-scale murals both at home and abroad – she is also an illustrator and tattoo artist.
