Li Yanxiang spent 6 days painting the "Jom Ngopi Cara Kita" mural.
An architectural designer, he painted the story of Muar’s oldest coffee brand into a picture based on the lifestyle that Muar residents are most familiar with. Through the history of coffee development, he wanted to let Muar residents understand the historical changes and evolution of Muar’s culture and times since the founding of the country.
The whole painting is presented in gradient colors, from the earliest way people liked to drink coffee from trays, to the older generation in Muar who used to pack coffee in ikat tepi (tied on one side), to people's habit of using condensed milk cans to package coffee, while now people use cups to drink coffee
This mural also tells the story of the struggle of 434, the well-known coffee brand in Muar, from its establishment to the present day. Although it has gone through different eras and changes, the love of people of all races in Muar for it remains the same.
Li Yanxiang pointed out that he referred to the comparison of photos and images of 434 Coffee from different eras and used brown tones to present it, giving people a yellowed and historical feeling. From black and white to color, it slowly brings people's vision from the past to the present.
The days when people in Muar used to use condensed milk cans to pack their coffee are over, but the old-fashioned taste is particularly hard to forget.
He said that the coffee shop in the painting is real and is now located at 434 Coffee on Haikeng Street , while the little girl and the old man drinking coffee in the painting are fictional characters created by stitching together photos.
He said that the floral patterns in the background of the mural are real coffee beans and branches, presented to people's eyes using a printing technique.
Li Yanxiang has been interested in painting and handicrafts since he was a child under the influence and training of his parents. He has been engaged in mural and installation art for years. Now he and his wife Chen Jinying have co-founded Co2 karbon dioksida, focusing on environmental art installation creation and mural creation.
