This mural is part of the 17-Walls project.
17Walls highlights the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals in the cityscape of Aarhus - specifically as 17 mural paintings around the City of Smiles.

This painting is inspired by Goal #12 ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’.

The artistic interpretation of the goal is by the Spanish artist Malakkai. “Always inspired and influenced by the earthy colors of the desert from his hometown, surrealism and the delicacy of messy and dirty lines. Always with a touch of irony or melancholy, passionate about the texture the spray can provides, as well as watercolors.'

Malakkai named it ‘From Farm to Table’. Malakkai says:"

 “My thoughts on the subject: Small actions like using the reusable bottle, or do the dishes with cold water are good, but they are a drop in the fast world we are living in. Capitalism has made us greedy, used to have access to everything at any time. We have forgotten about the cycles of nature.

 We eat oranges all year round, we can have strawberries any time of the year, this becomes a reality that is not real. Back in the days an avocado was a rare thing you could buy occasionally, now it's the average ingredient for any sandwich in northern Europe, and that is not how it should be. 

 “Fra jord til bord” is meant to draw attention, to the concept of enjoying what we have close by, to enjoy seasonal products, and as many products of proximity as possible. Without a massive demand of products that must travel from the other side of the world, or that are from different seasons. We can really make a difference by being part of the natural cycle again.

Simply just buy the potatoes from your local farmer, and not the strawberries from a greenhouse far far away.“  

After the creation of the artwork, Malakkai continued his journey around the world - leaving Aarhus with a new, beautiful piece of art that serves as a reminder of the Sustainable Development Goals and encourages us to take action for them.
