Description

This work is the third in a series of murals of holocaust survivors. The portrait is of Chemnitz born Justin Sonder. This mural was created when Chemnitz acted as European Capital of Culture in 2025.

Sonder has surived the Auschwitz concentration camp and dedicated his life to lecture school children about the horrific events he endured during the war, keeping the memories alive for all to learn from. These efforts earned him the honorary citizenship of the town of Chemnitz.

The mural is based on a photograph by Chemnitz photographer Philipp Gladsome. The tekst "Ich sollte überleben" translates to "I should survive"
