On the side wall of the building at Gerdesiaweg 15 is the 2002 mural ‘Exodus’ by the artist Jorge Kata Núñez.
The mural was created to mark the 25th anniversary of the Havenzicht Night Shelter as a gift to the residents of the Kralingen neighbourhood.
The Chilean artist Núñez was imprisoned in 1974 during the Pinochet regime for creating a pro-communist mural – he was 21 years old at the time – and was subsequently exiled to the Netherlands. Until his return in 2012, he created more than sixty murals in the Netherlands. A recurring theme is the quest for freedom – this is also evident in this mural, which features flying birds as its central motif.
