Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl

This mural was painted in 1991 in Segundo Barrio, on the east exterior wall of an EP Housing Authority Apartment Complex. It depicts a story based on Aztec mythology. Iztaccihuatl was a princess, Popocatepetl was a warrior. When he didn't return from battle, the princess was told that he had died. He hadn't died and returned to find that she had died from grief. He took her body to Tenochtitlan and knelt by her grave. Legend says the gods covered them with snow and changed them into mountains. Popocatepetl turned into an active volcano, using fire and lava to express his anger over the loss of his beloved Iztaccihuatl. This mural is showing its age, and often has a fully leafed out tree in front of it, but be persistent - it's worth it.
