The mural by Lonac, created for the 10th edition of the DUK Festival in Čačak, Serbia, marks a new chapter in the artist’s evolving journey. Specifically inspired by the Hrelić flea market in his hometown of Zagreb, which he visits weekly for photos, studies, and sketches, Lonac has woven these experiences into his work throughout the year. This mural is part of a broader series dedicated to flea markets, with four walls painted on the theme in 2024 and plans for two more in 2025.

The mural’s upper section shows a tranquil outdoor scene: a younger figure adjusts a jacket while a man under a colorful umbrella overlooks the scene, and an elderly individual sits peacefully nearby. The lower section transitions to a still-life composition of objects, including a roller skate, jug, and bust, set against a reddish background. This juxtaposition reflects the eclectic nature of flea markets—places where everyday objects and hidden stories converge.

Lonac took a looser approach to this wall, focusing on color and composition rather than meticulous rendering. He sees this evolution as part of a broader trend among long-standing artists—embracing new styles, mediums, and directions after a decade or more of practice. For Lonac, this shift is as challenging as it is inspiring, representing a willingness to step away from familiar territory to explore fresh ideas.

The artist expressed gratitude to the DUK Festival for inviting him to paint such a remarkable wall. He cherished his time in Čačak, enjoying the local flea market, connecting with fellow artists, savoring delicious food, and sampling traditional rakija. Looking ahead, Lonac feels energized about continuing this series and further experimenting with storytelling, style, and subject matter in 2025, envisioning an even more creative and inspiring year to come.
