The Crystal Ship 2026 markeert de 10e verjaardag van het befaamde openbare kunstfestival van Oostende, dit jaar samengesteld door Matthias Schoenaerts, die werkt onder zijn artiestennaam Zenith. Voor deze jubileumeditie brengt Schoenaerts meer dan twintig nationale en internationale kunstenaars samen uit de graffiti, street art en hedendaagse schilderkunst – de drie disciplines die zijn eigen artistieke visie vormgeven. Van 30 maart tot en met 11 april 2026 transformeren deze kunstenaars Oostende tot een tijdelijk open atelier, waar ze nieuwe muurschilderingen creëren in de hele stad, terwijl inwoners en bezoekers het proces van dichtbij kunnen volgen.

Met ROA toverde de organisatie van The Crystal Ship een mooie verrassing uit de hoed. De Belgische street art legende stond oorspronkelijk niet op de line up, maar bleek plots verrassend genoeg wel aan de slag te zijn in Oostende.

ROA staat vooral bekend om zijn sterke obsessie voor dieren. Hij combineert vaak leven, dood en leven na de dood in zijn muurschilderingen. Zijn dieren zijn dikwijls zo geschilderd dat ze skeletten en interne organen bevatten, wat de aanblik nog realistischer maakt. Zijn meeste werken worden gekenmerkt door een mengeling van zwart, wit en grijstinten.

Deze nieuwe muurschildering met zijn op elkaar gestapelde dieren aan het AZ ziekenhuis roept herinneringen aan de historische mural die ROA voor The Crystal Ship 2016 maakte.

The Crystal Ship 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Ostend’s renowned public art festival, curated this year by Matthias Schoenaerts, working under his artist name Zenith. For this milestone edition, Schoenaerts brings together more than twenty national and international artists from graffiti, street art and contemporary painting — the three disciplines that shape his own artistic vision. From 30 March to 11 April 2026, these artists will transform Ostend into a temporary open studio, creating new murals across the city while residents and visitors witness the process up close.

With ROA, the organisers of The Crystal Ship pulled a lovely surprise out of the hat. The Belgian street art legend wasn’t originally on the line-up, but surprisingly enough, he turned out to be at work in Ostend.

ROA is best known for his intense obsession with animals. He often combines life, death and the afterlife in his murals. His animals are frequently depicted with skeletons and internal organs, making them look even more realistic. Most of his works are characterised by a mixture of black, white and shades of grey.

This new mural, featuring animals stacked on top of one another at the AZ hospital, evokes memories of the historic mural ROA created for The Crystal Ship 2016.
