Friendly R. Rice

Description

The mural features a large portrait of Friendly R. Rice, who served as the principal of Blackshear Elementary School from 1931 to 1972. Principal Rice is recognized for initiating one of the first elementary school libraries for African Americans in the area and establishing a free lunch program. The artwork also depicts figures representing the generations and skills that built the local community, as well as scenes of gardening and education
