The painting begins to take shape and as the colors appear, the cat seems to float, recalling the suspended worlds of Japanese ukiyo-e art ("pictures of the floating world"). The green, black and magenta overlays give volume to the character and the light that breaks up into fur, a technique that borrows something from post-impressionism.
