The Papengang is an alley in the going out neighborhood. There are nice bars, but as a woman alone, we don’t always feel very safe there. At our first meeting for this mural, one of us got catcalled there: in broad daylight. So we wanted to add something that could change this! We put the ‘ben je oké’ from the Rutgers campaign. This is a proven way to fight against harassment in the nightlife. By asking ‘ben je oké’ to the people who you think are being harassed, you can make people feel way safer while going out.
And by such a coincidence: the saturday after this mural was finished, when we (Lotte and Jonna) went dancing, I (Jonna) got groped, and immediately a guy came up to me and asked if I was okay! That was such an amazing and safe feeling. We hope that with this mural we can add to this positive trend.
