The mural is part of L'Empreinte, an artistic and cultural residency project focused on urban art, organized by Digital Street Art. For the first edition, the project is taking place in Cayenne, in a neighborhood undergoing changes, Rénovation Urbaine.
The residency took place over the course of two weeks. During the first week, we met with several residents of the neighborhood to hear stories that have shaped the memory of the territory. Then, we proposed two sketches that were voted on by the residents of the neighborhood.
After long exchanges and conversations with some residents, the Carnival theme was mentioned frequently. This cultural manifestation is present in the neighborhood and served as a reference for the artistic creation of the mural.
The character carries a Carnival mask, a traditional Creole hat, and holds a trumpet, an instrument that is usually played only by men in Carnival groups. We adorned the character with medicinal plants, such as kassialata, couachi, and djapana, which are easily found and recognized by the residents of the neighborhood.
The mural is an invitation to think about female protagonist in contemporary cultural and artistic expression territories.
