Description

The mural combines two contrasting female portraits with an expressive, intensely colourful composition. It is painted on an old stone recess or doorway set into a masonry wall.

The combination of monochrome stencil portraits and a seemingly spontaneous, brightly coloured spray-painted background recalls the French stencil art movement, which emerged as a distinct form of urban art in the late 1970s and 1980s. The strong contrast between the sharply defined faces and the gestural fields of colour gives the work its immediate visual impact.

The mural is attributed to Epsylon Point, an artist associated with the French stencil art scene. He is recognised as a pioneer of colour stencil art, which he developed from 1983 onwards. His work frequently combines freely painted abstract backgrounds with stencilled imagery.
