De schildering toont een beroep dat al even geleden ingehaald werd door de technologie, namelijk de lantaarnaansteker. Met deze muurschildering brengen we een ode aan het beroep dat licht bracht in de duisternis.

De lantaarnaansteker was in dienst van de gemeente (aha, vandaar op het stadhuis!) en zorgde voor verlichting in de Doetinchemse binnenstad. Met zijn zwavelstok, toen een moderne versie van een lucifer, ging hij met een ladder de lantaarnpalen af. Op de achtergrond van de schildering is het oude gemeentehuis van Doetinchem afgebeeld.

The Lantern lighter
The painting shows a profession that was overtaken by technology some time ago, namely the lamplighter. With this mural we pay tribute to the profession that brought light to the darkness.
“A mural is a nice way of telling stories, and certainly when you can learn something.” Artist Rosalie.

The lamplighter was employed by the municipality (aha, hence the town hall!) and provided lighting in the city center of Doetinchem. With his matchstick, then a modern version of a match, he went down the lampposts with a ladder. The old town hall of Doetinchem is depicted in the background of the painting.
