Anyone driving into Sittard via the Rijksweg will see a mural on the side wall of the house at number 259, which adds a special touch to the entrance to Sittard and the Sanderbout neighbourhood. The mural is intended to make this spot more beautiful and attractive. The resident of the property is of Spanish origin and took the initiative to brighten up her home with a work of art. In consultation with her, this colourful design was chosen. It depicts the exuberant atmosphere of Andalusia.

The artist said: “This 10-by-6-metre mural is a cry from my heart. She symbolises the bond between cultures and neighbours. Inspired by the flower-lined streets and the warmth of the people, the gaze of my flamenco gypsy woman came to life in the Netherlands.”

N.B.: Unfortunately, shortly after its completion, the artwork was defaced with the slogan “Fuck your import street art” at the bottom of the mural. The slogan, an act of sacrilege within the art world, is presumably a reference to the artist’s Spanish origins. The letters DPA stand for Drunk Painting Addicts, a group of graffiti artists from Sittard. The municipality of Sittard-Geleen suspects that a local artist is responsible for this damage.

Wie Sittard binnenrijdt via de Rijksweg, ziet op de zijmuur van het huis op nummer 259 een muurschildering staan die de ingang van Sittard en de wijk Sanderbout extra uitstraling geeft. De muurschildering is bedoeld om deze plek mooier en aantrekkelijker te maken. De bewoonster van het pand is van Spaanse afkomst en had het initiatief genomen om haar woning of te fleuren met een kunstwerk. In overleg met haar is gekozen voor dit kleurrijke ontwerp. Het laat de uitbundige sfeer van Andalusië zien. 

De artiest zei hierover: “Deze muurschildering van 10 bij 6 meter is een schreeuw vanuit mijn hart. Ze symboliseert de band tussen culturen en buren. Geïnspireerd door de met bloemen omzoomde straten en de hartelijkheid van de mensen, kwam de blik van mijn flamenco-zigeunerin tot leven in Nederland.”

N.B.: Helaas is het kunstwerk kort na de realisatie aan de onderkant beklad met de slogan "Fuck your import steetart". De slogan, een daad van heiligschennis binnen de kunstenaarswereld, is vermoedelijk een verwijzing naar de Spaanse afkomst van de kunstenaar. De letters DPA zijn synoniem voor Drunk Painting Addicts, een groepje Sittardse graffitikunstenaars. De gemeente Sittard-Geleen vermoedt dat een lokale artiest verantwoordelijk is voor deze beschadiging.
