AVERROES

Description

Titled "Averroes, luz del pensamiento" (Averroes, Light of Thought), this 80-square-meter urban mural was commissioned by the Local Council to commemorate the 900th anniversary of his birth (1126–2026), to the Artist Eva Vega. This is the second Mural by Eva Vega which pays tribute to the prominent Cordoba Philosopher, this time overlooking the Guadalquivir River

The artwork depicts a monumental portrait of Averroes (Ibn Rushd), the famous 12th-century Islamic philosopher, jurist, and physician who was born in Córdoba. He is represented in a classical, sculptural style, wearing a traditional turban and robes while holding an open book

Averroes left behind an important legacy that bridged the Islamic Golden Age and the European Renaissance, harmonizing Reason and Faith, hence often described as the "founding father of secular thought in Western Europe"
