The artwork was created by WHOLE9, a renowned Japanese two-person artist duo consisting of painters Hitch and Simo.Creation DateThe mural was painted and officially completed in November 2021. It was launched as the second major installation of the community-focused Nakano Mural Project. Central Subject: The artwork depicts a local university student in a candid morning moment, balancing a touch of grogginess with her routine as she gets ready for school. Local Identity & Culture: The surrounding elements blend the student's personal interests with distinct markers of the Nakano district. This includes representations of Nakano Ward's official symbols: the chinquapin tree (Shiinoki) and bright, blooming azalea flowers (Tsutsuji). Urban Motifs: Peeking through the abstract waves of color is the dark, structural silhouette of the iconic, former Nakano Sun Plaza building. Bold accents of orange and yellow are woven throughout the design, intentionally matching the color scheme of the JR Chuo Line trains running directly above the wall.The entire piece was funded via a crowdfunding campaign titled "Color Your Community" (CYC), utilizing recycled and leftover paints to promote sustainability and brighten the public space around the station's plaza.
