The mermaid

Description

The sugarcanes on the mermaid's shirt are a symbol of the history of Acquedolci, as the town’s name literally means “sweet waters”.

It is said that the land on which the town was built was covered with sugarcane, imported by the Arabs during the period of the Emirate of Sicily, between 831 and 1091.

According to another version, the name "Acquedolci" refers to the numerous freshwater springs in the area.
