Description

From Melanie's Instagram;
"A lilac and pink tinged suburban still life, for Coburg.

Nestled in one of my favourite pockets of the inner north, creating this work was an absolute dream. Commissioned by really thoughtful and generous clients, an artwork created not just for them but for the whole neighbourhood that surrounds them to view each day.

This work brings together two visual worlds that speak to the changing character of the inner north. The porcelain goose and dahlia reference the domestic gardens, decorative objects and suburban aesthetics of 1950s Coburg and Brunswick, when European traditions and ornamental gardens shaped the character of these neighbourhoods.

These nostalgic references are brought together with native gum leaves and birdlife, a red wattlebird and silvereye, acknowledging the growing reintroduction of Australian native flora and fauna within these changing suburbs.

Rather than presenting these histories as opposing, the design imagines them coexisting - just as they do today.

This was the first time painting my nan's porcelain Canadian goose at scale, and this colour palette is total heaven for me. And painted during a little recent warm spell!"
