Trh a jatka (Market and Slaughterhouse)

The giant pink bear creates a contemporary dialogue with the original bull sculptures “Market and Slaughterhouse” by Vincenc Vosmík and Bohuslav Schnirch (1895), which welcome visitors at the main entrance of Holešovice Market Hall. Reflecting the site’s former role as Prague’s Central Slaughterhouse and commodity exchange, the bear tears through a pedestal inspired by the original sculptures while searching for honey, adding another layer of meaning to the historic decoration. Together, the sculptures on both sides of the complex symbolize market cycles—the bull represents prosperity, while the bear represents recession—bringing the historic sculptural decoration into the context of today’s uncertain world.
