Řeka (River)

Description

Stepping down the access ramp of the HolKa footbridge onto Štvanice Island, visitors are welcomed by a life-sized female figure standing on a 1.5-metre-high pedestal. Made of patinated concrete, the sculpture shares the same material as the HolKa footbridge, but softens its minimalist and austere character. The work is based on Hendrych’s earlier plaster piece Figure, created between 1981 and 1982. The artist leaves its meaning open, suggesting it could represent “the personification of water, the Vltava River, humanity in general, a female saint, and so on,” but invites visitors to find their own meaning.
