De naam van Galerie Refugiehuis verwijst naar de locatie waarin de galerie is gevestigd: het historische gebouw dat vroeger dienstdeed als Refugiehuis van de Abdij van Herkenrode.

In het Refugiehuis worden op geregelde tijdstippen expo's georganiseerd door SAGA, de organisatie die de street art in Hasselt cureert. De getoonde werken in de galerie hebben dus vaak ook een link met street art.

SAGA organiseerde onder meer al de expo 'Beyond Boundaries' waarin je werk van graffitiartiesten zoals Patrick 'Jellyfish' Croes, Siger, Lindert Steegen en Oli-B kon bewonderen.

Een andere expo was 'Silence / In Between', die de Hasseltse kunstenaars Bart Deglin en Mies Cosemans samenbrengt voor een unieke samenwerking. Bart Deglin is een kunstschilder die onder meer een muurschildering in Runkst heeft en van wie je ook paste ups in het stadscentrum kan terugvinden. Mies Cosemans is dan weer een freelance documentaire- en portretfotograaf. De werken van Deglin en Cosemans hebben bijzonder veel gemeen. Ze overlappen elkaar vaak en worden telkens gekenmerkt door door hun beider fascinatie voor vervreemding.

In 'Crossing Borders' gingen Philip Bosmans en Olav Brouwers met elkaar in dialoog. Ze vinden elkaar in het (sur)realisme en roepen vervreemding op bij de kijker. Bosmans creëert kleurrijke, popsurrealistische en fantasievolle werelden, terwijl Brouwers meer ingetogen, melancholische en introspectieve schilderijen maakt.

'Seriously?', de meest recente expo, focuste op humor als overlevingsstrategie. In een wereld die zichzelf té serieus neemt, is de lach namelijk ons meest subversieve wapen. 'Seriously' toonde werk van onder meer Bieke Buckinx, Brecht Vandebroucke, Call Me Frank, Jan Leenders en Katrien Vandecruys.

Another exhibition was “Silence / In Between”, which brought together local artists Bart Deglin and Mies Cosemans for a unique collaboration. Bart Deglin is a painter who has a mural in Runkst and whose paste-ups can also be found in the city centre. Mies Cosemans is a freelance documentary and portrait photographer. The works of Deglin and Cosemans have a lot in common. They often overlap and are characterised by their mutual fascination with alienation.

Bosmans creates colourful, pop surrealist and imaginative worlds, while Brouwers produces more subdued, melancholic and introspective paintings.

'Seriously?', the most recent exhibition, focused on humour as a survival strategy. In a world that takes itself far too seriously, laughter is, after all, our most subversive weapon. “Seriously” featured work by artists including Bieke Buckinx, Brecht Vandebroucke, Call Me Frank, Jan Leenders and Katrien Vandecruys.
