Local fisherman Bertus ‘Saap’ Roelofs.

Description

This mural portrays Bertus “Saap” Roelofs, a well-known local fisherman. It was painted in 2024 by Rosalie de Graaf (RoosArt).

Saap held the fishing rights on the Oude IJssel, from Doetinchem to the Kemnade, and lived on a houseboat near the Oude IJssel bridge.
The nearby cycle bridge beside the railway bridge is named after him: the Saap Roelofs Bridge.

Special thanks to Stadsmuseum Doetinchem.
